Gulf Coast Art Festival
It is time for the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival. As the Volunteer coordinator for the Children’s Area, I again need your volunteer support. In 2010, more than 30 adults and 250 students volunteered their time for the children’s events. This is appreciated by those responsible for making this annual event successful and most importantly by the children and parents who visited this area. We need both faculty and students of your various service clubs and community clubs. What a great way for your students to get volunteer hours during this weekend and to be able to participate in this worthwhile and fun event.
The Arts Festival will be held November 4th, 5th and 6th, 2011. Please fill out the attached Volunteer Sign-Up Sheets and e-mail them to Thy_Nguyen529@hotmail.com (Thy_Nguyen) by October 14, 2011. Contact me at (850) 449-9143 after 5pm if you have any questions. Please emphasize that we need both student and adult volunteers.
As in the past, I will keep track of the volunteer hours and provide each school with a copy of the hours that each student or adult worked. This is a great way for students to get service hours required for certain scholarships and service cubs.
If a student is a member of Chain Reaction you may sign up there or contact Drew Bedurahat cr1@mychainreaction.org or 850-202-0691 learn more about the volunteer program they have in our area.

Regency Hospice
We are actively recruiting teen volunteers for our program. Our teens may serve in numerous capacities ranging from office work to patient companionship (patient interaction is contingent on each student's level of maturity). Their work with us will be documented towards scholarship requirements and we keep a rigorous account of the hours they log. I also happily provide reference letters for reliable volunteers. We require our volunteers attend training and a CPR certification class. These are both provided at no cost and the training can be scheduled to best fit the student's availability. If you have any outstanding teens looking for a great volunteer opportunity they may contact me at 850-226-4166 or email me at vbrown@regencyhospice.com. I am also available to speak to your students about our program and volunteerism. Please reply if you would like to set up a presentation. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Thank you for everything you do to help make a difference in the lives of young people!
Pet Welfare
Pet Welfare, the no-kill, all-volunteer animal shelter located on Eglin Air Force Base, is seeking assistance in the form of office, fundraising, dog walking, cat cuddlers, publicity, etc. As publicity coordinator, I wanted to get the word out about our shelter. As many of us know, volunteering is an increasingly important part of scholarships applications. Our group would welcome the opportunity to assist today's students in becoming better prepared for tomorrow while helping improve the quality of care for our animals. Perhaps, if you have any students wanting to become a Vet or just loves working with animals, we could leave a flyer for them to pick up? Feel free to visit our website (www.petwelfare.net), contact me at this email or call 334-657-0274.
United program at United Way
The mission of Youth United (YU) is to engage teens in community service. We want to make it convenient, easy, and fun for teens to volunteer in our community! Students can get information on volunteer opportunities via email, text, Twitter and Facebook. I am always in attendance at volunteer events to supervise and direct the teens, make sure they have everything they need, and document their work. We have regular volunteer opportunities (weekly) available through a very diverse network of United Way agencies doing a wide variety of work. Anyone can volunteer with us; the only requirement is a kind heart! J
Further, we are currently recruiting YU members for the 2011 – 2012 school-year. The only requirements for members are they have time to attend meetings and that they have a 2.5 GPA. YU members get a variety of benefits over YU volunteers including these below and more:
more volunteer hours earned by attending meetings, doing promotional work, attending lectures and trainings, etc (last year, our top 2 performing members earned 83 and 79 volunteer hours!)
- letters of recommendation
- the benefit of United Way’s resources, network and credibility
- the opportunity to receive awards and be recognized among reputable community leaders
- the opportunity to be recognized in local papers and on local TV and radio programs
YU members also gain a lot of valuable experience as they learn leadership skills through their involvement in the planning and organizing process of researching, creating, marketing, and promoting volunteer events. They attend regular meetings and are organized into 3 sub-committees: project management, marketing, and resource development and distribution. We also have an executive committee which determines program policies, conducts new member orientations, establishes goals and develops strategic plans. Members not only get to come up with great ideas, but learn how to make their ideas come to fruition.
Attached is our YU brochure and our website is www.united-way-youth.org . We are also on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/YouthUnited32548 . All these sources have more information along with pictures and details of the work we do.
I would love to be able to meet you all, bring your office some YU brochures and answer any questions you may have about the program. I could even bring a current YU member with me so you can hear the benefits of the program from a teenager’s perspective!
Calling all Sponsors, Arts & Crafts Vendors, Food Vendors and Volunteers!
The stage has been set for the 33rd Annual community festival. In the spirit of this great community, and truly kicking off the Fishing Rodeo, the Destin Charter Boat Association is bringing the festival to the Destin Harbor. It will stretch from Harborwalk Marina to the Boathouse. There will be NO admission and NO fencing. Dual stages at either end will feature all local and regional singers/bands/songwriters. There will be children's activities throughout the length of the festival, including pony rides and a petting zoo, as well as great seafood, and a variety of vendors. Fun for all ages!
Our goal is to successfully promote the community, it's heritage, and it's unity. We realize that we could not make that possible without all of your support.
If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact Melissa Steffen at 850-218-0232 or msteffen5@yahoo.com
Volunteer Form | Rules
My name is Victoria Brown and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Regency Hospice. I want to extend the invitation for your students to attend our Volunteer Training to be held on June 10th at 10:00am at our Fort Walton Beach office. The address is 11 Racetrack Road, Suite G. We accept teenage volunteers with parental consent and two references. Their volunteer work can be as simple as office duties or as fun as helping with community outreach events at assisted living facilities and senior centers. They may volunteer as few as one hour per week and will be trained at no cost to themselves or their organizations. All volunteer work will be documented for their use towards scholarships and college applications. I would be happy to answer any questions you or their parents may have and you are certainly welcome to attend their volunteer training. Thank you again for all that you do to help our youth prepare for their futures! Have a great summer!
