Avid
AVID is a program designed to prepare underachieving
students with high academic potential for entrance to four-year universities
and colleges. AVID selectively targets students whose academic performance
has historically been “in the middle.”
Students
are required to take a rigorous course of study designed to prepare
them to enter colleges and universities at the conclusion
of their high school careers. These rigorous courses are gradually
introduced to incoming students. As students progress through high
school, they are expected to increase their enrollment in honors and
AP courses. AVID provides the support students need to be successful
in these college prep courses.
Students in the program are also required to take the AVID elective
class. This class provides students with study and organizational skills
they will need for high school and beyond. A curriculum that includes
note taking strategies, listening skills, organization techniques and
time management systems are thoroughly covered in the class.
Also tutors are available for AVID students during the AVID elective
class. These tutors are a valuable source of support for the rigorous
curriculum required of the AVID student.
AVID has a 22-year record of success for motivated students who wish
to attend college after high school Currently AVID programs can be
found in over 1200 schools in 21 states and 14 countries.
